GOSHEN, Ind. – The Goshen men's soccer team put a number in the win column for the first time this season after defeating Saint Francis 2-1 at home on Saturday. Goshen is 1-1-1 in the Crossroads League.
Lucas Bontreger scored just ten minutes in on a cross from
Felipe Carli on the left side. Saint Francis struck back less than ten minutes later when Dominic Borucki scored on a header from a free kick taken by Mateo Abella. Goshen had the clear 9-3 shot advantage at the end of the first half, but five saves by Cougars goalkeeper Joe Deitering kept the score 1-1 at the break.
The teams were still tied until there was 5:06 to go and a foul inside the box led to a penalty kick for Goshen.
Lucas Bontreger's attempt went off the post, but a Saint Francis player had moved too soon, and Goshen had a second chance. Bontreger connected on the second attempt, scoring his second goal of the game. It gave the Leafs a 2-1 edge that would hold for the rest of the match.
Goshen had 18 shots and seven shots on goal compared to eight shots and four on goal for Saint Francis. Bontreger's first goal tied him with his father Myron Bontreger ('91) and David Roth ('98) for #11 on the Goshen all-time goals list. With his second goal and 35
th of his career, he passed those two and is now tied with Tony Figuerora ('87) for tenth. This was Bontreger's first multi-goal game of the season and the fifth of his career. He is the outright scoring leader for the team this year, with five goals scored.
