Eichenberger scores on senior night but late goals lead to Marian win

Allawai and Eichenberger combined for six of Goshen's seven shots

GOSHEN, Ind. – A goal in the final ten minutes and another in the final seconds widened the gap for Marian as they defeated the Goshen men's soccer team 4-1 on Senior Night. Senior Henrique Eichenberger scored Goshen's goal. Seniors Jonathan Aaron, Ryan Almeida, Ruam Barbosa, Matias da Fonseca, Henrique Eichenberger, Ayaan John, Wendo Kisila, Luiz Matteus Pontes, Vitor Romero dos Santos, and Jannik Schoske were recognized before the game.
 
Marian was on the board first when Nate Van Keulen's pass found Alan Tenorio and he scored on a loose ball at the right side of the goal box. Less than three minutes later, it was Van Keulen scoring on a through ball from Valentin Neuhold.
 
Eichenberger scored his goal from the right side in the 34th minute. It was his first goal this season. The score stayed 2-1 until there was less than eight minutes remaining. Evan Dawdy scored on a cross from the right side, and the Knights scored on a breakaway in the closing seconds of the game to make the score 4-1.
 
Marian had ten first half shots and nine in the second half. Goshen had just two in the first but five in the second. Eichenberger came off the bench with both of Goshen's two shots on goal. Mathurin Allawai had three of Goshen's seven shots.
 
Goshen (4-9-2, 1-5-1 CL) has seven points in the conference standings which puts the Leafs in a tie for seventh with Marian. The Leafs are at Spring Arbor on Wednesday, October 26, at 7:00 pm.

Senior Night Recognition
Good evening, and welcome to the Goshen College Soccer Complex! Tonight, we recognize the Goshen College men's soccer class of 2023.

Our seniors will leave Goshen having advanced in the classroom, on the field, and in the community. They have made the people and places around them better, and we are privileged to have had them for the time we did.

Please direct your attention to the field as we welcome director of athletics Dr. Erica Albertin, head coach Victor Newberg, and assistants Dan Sullivan and Giovanni Lopez to recognize our seniors.

We start by recognizing #2, Jonathan Aaron! Jonathan is being escorted by his mother, Nancy Aaron, his brother Josh Aaron, and his girlfriend, Chayton Burkhart. He has played two seasons as a Goshen defender, competing in 28 games and starting in 19. Jonathan is a biochemistry major and plans to further his education by attending pharmacy or med school. Thank you, Jonathan!
 
Next, we have #12, Ryan Almeida! Ryan is being escorted by Marcy and Brian Thompson and his girlfriend, Caleigh Resler. He has competed in 14 games as a Maple Leaf and started in nine. He is an information technology major and intends to work and travel the world. Thank you, Ryan!
 
Coming through now is #0, Ruam Barbosa! Ruam is escorted by his history advisor Philipp Gollner and history professor John Roth. And his family is joining via video call! He has been a goalkeeper for the Leafs for three seasons. Ruam is a history major with a global economics minor. In the future, he would like to open a business back in his home country of Brazil. Thank you, Ruam!
 
Let's congratulate #1, Matias da Fonseca! Matias is being escorted by Denise Shellhammer, Henrique Eichenberger and Insee Akarapan. He has started 36 games in goal in his three seasons at Goshen, made 152 saves, and posted four shutouts. He is studying business and sports management and would like to coach soccer in the future. Thank you, Matias!
 
Our next Goshen senior is #10, Henrique Eichenberger! Paige Renshaw, Shane Renshaw and Luke Bayliss are escorting Henrique. He has started in 46 games and racked up eight goals, six assists, and 42 shots on goal. He is a business major and intends to coach soccer upon leaving Goshen College. Thank you, Henrique!
 
Next, we have #26, Ayaan John! Ayaan is being escorted by his friends Richard, Saif, Karsten, and Shoaib. He has been a forward for GC for three seasons. He is majoring in exercise science and kinesiology and would like to model and explore new opportunities after graduating. Thank you, Ayaan!
 
#9 for Goshen, Wendo Kisila! Wendo is escorted by Juliana Mwose and family, Victor Newberg, Lucas Bontreger, and Henrique Eichenberger. He is a psychology major and a sports management minor. Wendo has especially made his presence known this season, starting in 12 games with three assists. He had two goals last season. He wants to use his skills to give opportunities to kids through soccer. Thank you, Wendo!
 
Let's next recognize #11, Luiz Matteus Pontes! Tebello Netne and Thamires Lima are escorting Luiz. Luiz has three goals in 18 starts at Goshen with 32 total shots. A kinesiology major, he plans to open his own business down the road. Thank you, Luiz!
 
Our next Goshen senior is #23, Vitor Romero dos Santos! Vitor is being escorted by his girlfriend, Szofia Kallai. As a midfielder, he has played in 19 games with a goal and five shots on goal. He is a business administration major and plans to make connections and gain experience upon leaving Goshen. Thank you, Vitor!
 
Rounding out our group of seniors is #4, Jannik Schoske! Jannik is being escorted by his girlfriend, Kira Pottner. He has started in 22 games as a midfielder and defender. Jannik is a business major with a sports management minor. After graduating, he intends to pursue a master's degree in business and stay connected to soccer. Thank you, Jannik!
 
Seniors - we wish nothing but the best for you in your future endeavors and thank you again for your contributions to the Goshen College men's soccer program. As you go out into the world, live FULL lives of faith, unity, learning and leadership. Ladies and gentlemen, let's hear it one last time for our men's soccer seniors!
