FORT WAYNE, Ind. - The Maple Leafs women's volleyball team had a 24-21 lead in the second set against (RV) Saint Francis on the road Wednesday night, yet the Cougars bounced back and left with a 3-0 win to move to 8-4 in the Crossroads League.
Saint Francis created a bit of separation midway through the first set on the way to a 25-21 win to start things off. Goshen erupted to at the beginning of the second set, winning the first four points and taking a 9-1 lead. USF later had a 6-0 run to cut an eight-point deficit to a two-point margin. However, Goshen held the lead and had set point when up 24-21. Then the Cougars scored five straight from a kill by Haidyn Carrico, an ace from Eliza Madden, and a few Goshen attack errors. They won the set 26-24.
The Cougars were the ones to get off to a hot start in the third, building up to a 12-3 lead. Down 21-13 at one point, the Leafs rallied to score seven points in a row with kills from
Amy Baca and
Sadie Brenneman with Baca serving. Saint Francis retaliated by winning four of the next five, taking the set 25-21.
Saint Francis had more attack errors but narrowly had a better hitting percentage - .168 to .149. Both teams had seven blocks.
Amy Baca guided Goshen with ten kills, five digs, two block assists, a solo block and a .346 hitting percentage.
Sadie Brenneman contributed 14 kills and seven digs but had three reception errors.
Christina Towne had ten digs,
Sydney Stutsman had 20 assists and
Jaelyn Amhdar added 11 more.
