HUNTINGTON, Ind. - The Goshen women's basketball team accomplished a number of achievements at Huntington on Saturday afternoon. They improved to 5-1, they started Crossroads League play with a win, and they ended a nine-game losing streak against the Foresters. To top it off, they won the game by 30 points.
"Huntington was very uncomfortable with our zone today and I felt we came out with great focus on the game plan," head coach
Stephanie Miller said after the game. "I'm proud of the ladies tonight for handling their business on the road and in Crossroads play, which is not easy to do."
Goshen jumped to a 9-0 lead in the first two minutes and 43 seconds. It was 19-5 at the end of the first quarter and 42-19 at the half. As the teams went into their locker rooms, Zion Neat had just one point less that the entire Foresters team combined.
Much like the first quarter, the Maple Leafs defense dominated in the third, only allowing nine points. Goshen outscored Huntington by seven points in the final two quarters and won by a score of 72-42.
The Leafs have outscored their last two opponents by an average of 27 points after losing to Holy Cross College by 36 - their only loss this season. "Holy Cross exposed a lot of our weaknesses," said Miller. "We thought we were containing on defense, blocking out, and running in transition, which is what we are working to focus on with this squad." She credits the week between each of the last two games to really put the lessons from the Holy Cross game into practice and make improvements.
Goshen's last win against Huntington was on January 18, 2017, and they hadn't won at Huntington since 2004. The Maple Leafs have only won a conference road game by 30+ points twice in the program's history - and one of them was today. The Leafs have been in a conference since 1985 - spanning 267 games. The other occasion was on January 23, 2002 during an 87-52 win at Grace. This was the fewest points the Leafs have allowed in a conference road game since January 31, 2004, when they won at Grace 63-42. It is the team's largest margin of victory in any conference game since 2016 and the first time they've shot .500 or better on the road since 2018.
GC made 50.0% of their shots, the team's highest percentage this year. Both teams hit five threes but Huntington did so in 29 attempts while Goshen needed just 14. Rayah Kolbusz came off the bench and was 2-2 from deep. Goshen dominated the points in the paint category 40-12, had a +10 rebound margin, and had three fewer turnovers.
Neat scored all of her 18 points in the first half and had three assists. "She was able to attack creatively in transition and really stretch the floor when her teammates were attaching and knocked down some big threes," said Miller. "She stepped up and took a ton of the defensive lessons from the last week and put them into practice today."
Kyla Foster scored 12 points with eight coming in the final two quarters and
Sa'drea Rougeau scored 11. Syanne Mohamed had six points and 13 rebounds and Kiana Oelling was 4-6 with eight points.
Goshen hosts Grace on Tuesday, November 22, at 7:00 pm. It is the last home game until December 10 and the last game before Thanksgiving break.
