GOSHEN, Ind. – Although the Cougars of IU-Kokomo made it close, the Goshen women's basketball team held them off to win 73-65 and remain undefeated this season.
The Maple Leafs looked strong in the first quarter, holding the visitors to just ten and scoring 19 of their own. With just under five minutes to go in the second quarter, a bucket by Kiana Oelling gave Goshen their largest lead of the night. At halftime, however, the lead had shrunk to just four.
Early into the third quarter, the Cougars tied it up at 34 and then again at 36 and 38. They never took the lead, though, and Goshen went on a 9-2 run to bring their advantage back up to seven. GC made ten free throws in the fourth quarter and won 73-65.
Goshen's field goal percentage was 10.6% higher than IU-Kokomo, and the three-point percentage was 15.1% higher. Goshen went 18-24 at the charity stripe, but the Cougars were just 7-15.
Syanne Mohamed was just one rebound away from a double-double – going for 10 points and nine rebounds.
Sa'drea Rougeau had 16 points and seven rebounds. Zion Neat added 15 points, eight rebounds, and five steals. Kiana Oelling posted eight points, and eight rebounds, and Kyla Foster had six assists to go with her seven points. Along with Nay Butler and
Sophia Eli, Goshen had seven players with at least seven points.
The Leafs had twice as many turnovers as the Cougars, but they made up for it by scoring points in the paint and hitting free throws. Goshen lost in Kokomo last season by eight and had lost three of the previous four in the series. Now at 3-0, Goshen is at Holy Cross College on Saturday, November 5, at 1:00 pm.
