SPRING ARBOR, Mich. - First-year
Caleb Wright easily surpassed a season-high point total with 28 on Saturday afternoon, but a strong second half led to a comeback win for Spring Arbor over the GC men's basketball team, 72-67.
The teams went back and forth for the first 13 minutes, and Spring Arbor held a 27-26 lead. Then, a 19-9 Goshen run led to the largest lead of the game for the Maple Leafs at nine - right after the second half got underway. Goshen held the lead until the final five minutes. The Cougars took a 64-63 lead with 4:59 to go and Goshen couldn't reel back in. Down three in the final seconds, Greg Johnson attempted a three that would have tied the game, but it was just short. Caleb Wright and two successful free throws, SAU left with a five-point win.
Caleb Wright's scored 28 points and shot 6-9 from the three-point line. He was 10-16 shooting overall and 2-2 at the charity stripe. He added four rebounds, two assists, and a steal. His previous best point total in a game this year was 17 points.
Kaden Johnson had six points and eight rebounds, but four personal fouls.
Elias Ramirez scored eight,
Isaac Miller had seven points, four rebounds, and three assists, and
Clayton MacLagan recorded four points and six rebounds.
Gabe Newhof led Spring Arbor with 24 points and ten rebounds in just 22 minutes. Austin Braun and Travis Grayson had 15 points each. The Cougars outscored Goshen in the paint 24-10 in the second half.
The loss ends a two-game win streak against SAU for the Leafs. Goshen now plays five non-conference games before resuming league play after the new year. The Maple Leafs host Judson on Saturday, December 10, at 3:00 pm.
