Goshen drops two at #16 Marian

Catenacci hits big three-run home run in game two

INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. - The Maple Leafs softball team lost a pair of games to #16 Marian on the road on Tuesday. The Knights shut out the Leafs 5-0 in the first game and needed just six innings in game two - winning 13-5.

In the first inning, Shelbie Stotts hit an RBI single for Marian, which would be all they needed. Three of the runs for the Knights came from sacrifice flies, and another was from a wild pitch.

Sydney Wilson dominated in six innings on the mound. The senior allowed no earned runs and no walks. She struck out four and allowed just three hits. Goshen's Mia Pawelski allowed four earned runs in six innings. She struck out three and walked one.

Alyssa McDonald had two of the four hits for the Maple Leafs, one of them being a double. Ri Koteles hit a single, and Ellie Van Heerde had another in her only at-bat.

Marian held Goshen scoreless for another three innings to start game two. They had a two-run single in the first, and an RBI single in the third moved the lead to 3-0.

Jessica Bachtell ended the scoring drought for Goshen in the fourth. Her double to left-center brought McDonald home and put the Leafs on the board. A GC throwing error resulted in two runs for Marian in the bottom half of the inning, and they added another from an RBI single to go up 7-1.

Goshen's offense came in droves in the fifth inning. Shea VanScoter doubled, and Koteles walked. Then, Alisyn Catenacci delivered big with a three-run home run. McDonald singled and would later score when Carissa Fillingame doubled to center. Marian's lead was just 7-5 now.

The Knights weren't battered. After Goshen's four-hit, four-run inning, the home team responded with six hits and six runs. A two-run home run by Sierra Norman made the score 13-5 and ended the game with the mercy rule in place. Marian won in five innings.

Fillingame had two hits for Goshen with a double, a walk, and an RBI. Catenacci had three RBIs on her homer, and McDonald scored twice in the game.

Amanda Hartman allowed nine earned runs in 4.2 innings. She struck out three and walked three.

Marian improves their record to 10-1 this season and 4-0 at home. They were 30-6 in the Crossroads League last season. Goshen has lost three straight and is 8-6.

Goshen has another opportunity to beat a ranked Crossroads League opponent on the road tomorrow. They will take on #8 Indiana Wesleyan in Marion at 5:00 pm on Wednesday. These games were previously scheduled for Friday but had been moved up. After a doubleheader at Mount Vernon Nazarene on Saturday, Goshen starts the home season with two newly scheduled games against Cleary University on Sunday. Those games will start at 1:00 pm at the GC Softball Complex.
