Leafs extend win streak to eight games before loss in game two at IU-South Bend

Pawelski has allowed just one run in last 19 innings, McDonald has no strikeouts in 40 at-bats

SOUTH BEND, Ind. – Goshen softball set the second-longest win streak in program history on Wednesday night in South Bend – winning game one 6-1. The eight-game win streak is the longest for the Maple Leafs since 2001. IU-South Bend won game two and ended the run with a 7-4 victory.

Mia Pawelski and Alyssa McDonald continued to be the stars for Goshen. The Leafs had a five-run fifth-inning in game one - Alisyn Catenacci walked to bring home Goshen's first run with the bases loaded. Next, McDonald hit a shot to the gap in right-center – a triple that cleared the bases. Pawelski contributed with her bat on a double over the center fielder's head, scoring McDonald and giving Goshen a 5-0 lead.

Another run came in the seventh when McDonald singled to score Koteles. IU-South Bend had one run in the seventh, but it was too little, too late. Goshen won 6-1.

Pawelski pitched all seven innings, allowing one earned run and just three hits. She struck out eight and forced 12 flyouts and one groundout. Pawelski has settled in during her last three starts. She has given up just one earned run in her last 19.0 innings.

McDonald was 2-4 with a run, a stolen base, and four RBIs. Ri Koteles went 2-2 with two walks and two runs scored. Catenacci, Edith Vega, and Grace Schmitt scored the remaining Goshen runs.

Goshen's winning streak is the second-longest in program history, following a 14-game run in March and April 2001. They surpassed the seven-game win streak that the 2021 team set.

The Titans had a much quicker offensive response in game two. A single in the first scored a run, and then the home team added two more in the second – one coming from a triple by Jozie Ramer.

With Vega on base, Koteles hit a big two-run home run in the fourth to cut IU-South Bend's lead to 3-2. The Titans put up two more runs in the fifth, and it was 5-2.

Koteles singled in the sixth, and Vega scored another run. Koteles advanced to second base on the throw. Later in the inning, Carissa Fillingame grounded out, but it scored Olivia Gibson, pinch-running for Koteles. GC pulled within one run again but left a runner at third when the inning concluded. The Titans had a two-run single off the bat of Danielle Gebhart that extended the lead to 7-4. The Maple Leafs had three straight groundouts in the seventh that ended the game and the eight-game win streak.

Koteles was 2-3 with the home run and three RBIs. Vega went 2-4 with two runs and a stolen base. Kamille Badibanga hit a double, and Shea VanScoter, McDonald, and Catenacci each had a single. Through 40 at-bats this season, McDonald has not struck out yet.

Amanda Hartman allowed five earned runs in 4.2 innings. Grace Schmitt allowed two in the last inning and a third. Goshen walked eight batters while IU-South Bend didn't walk any. Abigail Yarnell earned the win for the Titans, throwing a complete seven innings.

The Maple Leafs play at Oakland City on Saturday, March 12, at 1:00 pm EST in a doubleheader. Goshen plays at Brescia on Sunday, with games starting at 2:00 pm EST.
