GOSHEN, Ind. –
Ri Koteles continues to break records as she set the school record for home runs in a season on Wednesday when Goshen took on Taylor. But the Trojans prevailed twice – winning 11-10 and 9-6.
By the middle of the third inning of game one, Taylor led 10-2, with Goshen's two runs coming from a two-run home run by
Alisyn Catenacci. However, the Maple Leafs fought back in the next three innings.
Shea Van Scoter scored on a wild pitch in the third, and
Claire Ouellette hit a sac fly to center that scored
Alyssa McDonald. In the fourth,
Ri Koteles tied the single-season record with her 12
th home run – a three-run shot that cut the deficit to three.
The Trojans scored once in the fifth, and Goshen scored twice – from RBI singles by
Kyra Wilson and
Shea VanScoter. VanScoter scored on a wild pitch for a second time when the seventh inning rolled around, but the rally came up short for the Leafs, as Taylor secured an 11-10 win.
Ellie Van Heerde took her first loss of the season, allowing seven earned in one inning pitched.
Grace Schmitt threw 3.2 innings in relief, allowing just one earned run and three hits. VanScoter was 3-4 at the plate with two doubles and a single. She scored three of Goshen's runs.
Alisyn Catenacci was 2-5 with two RBIs. Goshen had ten walks –
Carissa Fillingame and Koteles had three each.
Unlike game one, the Leafs were the ones that got off to a fast start in the second game. The very first Goshen batter, VanScoter, homered to put GC on the board. Fillingame had an RBI single later in the inning to move the lead to 2-0.
Taylor scored an unearned run in the second, but Goshen had two more. McDonald scored on a throwing error, and
Mia Pawelski scored on a sac fly from VanScoter. The Leafs now led 4-1.
A five-hit third inning allowed the Trojans to tie the game, and Maddi Evans had a two-RBI double in the fourth, which gave TU its first lead.
Goshen found a couple more runs – the first from a sac fly by Pawelski. The next was a dinger from Koteles that gave her sole possession of the single-season home run record. With 12 homers, she surpasses Amy Clem, who had 11 in the 2009 season. Koteles has hit a home run in three consecutive games and has six home runs in her last eight games. She is tied for fourth in the Crossroads League in that category.
That tied the game at six, but three more runs sent Taylor over the top and to a 9-6 victory.
VanScoter had the loss on the mound, allowing five earned runs in four innings. Fillingame went 2-4, and McDonald scored two runs. McDonald hit her fourth triple of the season, which is tied for the second-most in a season in program history.
On Tuesday, Koteles surpassed the career RBI record and now sits at 143. The previous mark of 137 was established by Candy Feare, class of 2002.
Taylor improves to 17-9 in the Crossroads League. Goshen (19-23, 9-19 CL) hosts Saint Francis on Friday, April 22, at 3:00 pm.
