Kyra Wilson hit the walk-off single that scored
Grace Schmitt to give the Maple Leafs a 3-2 win in game one on Friday afternoon. Saint Francis roared back to win the second game in five innings.
Ri Koteles quickly put Goshen on the board with a home run to left-center in the first. This was her fourth consecutive game with a home run and extended her season total to 13.
Dani Karr hit a two-RBI single in the third that gave the Cougars the lead for a while. Then in the sixth,
Alisyn Catenacci hit an RBI double to right-center that brought
Ellie Van Heerde around to score and tied the game. Catenacci was also shutting down Saint Francis on the mound. She would go seven innings, allowing two earned runs on five hits. She had seven strikeouts and didn't walk a single batter.
She gave her team a chance as they headed to the bottom of the seventh.
Claire Ouellette singled, and Schmitt pinch ran – representing the go-ahead run. She advanced to second on a wild pitch and then scored once Wilson hit one to right-center.
Catenacci earned the win, improving to 2-1. She was 2-3 at the plate, along with Ouellette. Koteles had the homer,
Alyssa McDonald hit a double, and Wilson had the crucial single.
The Cougars had an answer in game two. After scoring once in the first, USF tacked on four runs in the second, led by a two-run home run by Carly Turner. They left a more considerable dent in the third with a five-run inning. Their eleventh run came in the fifth inning, and Goshen couldn't get any runs in the bottom half. The Cougars won by run-rule 11-0 in five innings.
Mia Pawelski took the loss, allowing four earned runs in an inning and a third. Goshen had five hits and three errors as a team. The Leafs only struck out twice but couldn't garner enough hits.
Edith Vega led the Leafs – going 2-2 with two singles.
Goshen (20-24, 10-20 CL) is at home again tomorrow, April 23. Goshen hosts Spring Arbor with game one starting at 1:00 pm and an expected temperature of 75 degrees at first pitch.
