Baker’s grand slam leads Goshen to split at Spring Arbor

Smith and Creager also hit homers in game one

SPRING ARBOR, Mich. – The Goshen baseball team split a doubleheader at Spring Arbor on day one of their final season series. The Maple Leafs won game one 10-6 before losing game two 10-3.

Goshen had a huge eight-run fifth inning, changing a three-run deficit to a five-run lead. Nate Lange hit an RBI single, Peyton Smith hit a sac fly, and Lange scored on a wild throw. That tied the game at four, but a grand slam to left by Morgan Baker doubled Goshen's runs scored – and the Leafs were up 8-4.

But that wasn't the only home run for the Leafs in the game. Smith hit one in the first inning, and Evan Creager hit one later in that fifth inning. Goshen had hit at least three home runs in two of their most recent three games – having done so in a 16-12 loss at Huntington. Goshen has 28 home runs this season – a tremendous improvement from the four from last season.

Eric Pettipiece earned the win – not allowing any runs and just one hit in the final 4.1 innings. He had four strikeouts and one walk. Jenner Rodammer, Smith, and Creager all had a multi-hit game. Baker had four RBIs, and Smith had three.

The Cougars had their own big inning in game two – putting up nine runs in the first.

Goshen scored two unearned runs in the first, but a three-run homer by Landon Raczkowski gave Spring Arbor the lead as they went on to score nine runs on eight hits in the inning.

Goshen's pitching was solid beyond that point, as Benjamin Witterstaetter and Kyle Staelgraeve combined to go 5.1 innings while allowing one earned run on three hits. Yet, the Leafs could only manage one more run, and SAU won 10-3.

Lange was 2-4 with a run scored, and Rodammer and Camm Nickell each had doubles. Peyton Smith had the loss on the mound.

Goshen (11-37, 6-28 CL) concludes the season on Saturday at Spring Arbor. The teams square off at 1:00 pm.
