GOSHEN, Ind. – The Maple Leafs softball team split a pair of games against the Bethel Pilots in Goshen on Tuesday as a part of the U.S. Highway 20 Cup. Bethel won game one 6-4, but Goshen came out victorious in game two, 3-2.
Olivia Gibson started the scoring for Goshen with a solo home run down the left-field line in the second inning.
Shea VanScoter hit a home run to left as well in the third to give the Leafs a 2-0 edge.
Mia Pawelski started strong on the mound – only allowing two Bethel hits in the first four innings. However, the Pilots found their offense in the latter half of the game. After an RBI single in the fifth, the visitors added three runs in the sixth to lead 4-2. Then, Marissa Navarette brought in two runs with her double in the seventh.
VanScoter doubled to start the bottom of the seventh, and
Ri Koteles hit a two-run homer to left immediately after. Alyssa Hartman singled next, but the Leafs couldn't shrink the deficit anymore, as they lost 6-4.
Pawelski allowed three earned runs in six innings pitched – striking out six and walking four. The loss puts her season record at 5-6.
Goshen hit three home runs in game one – the first time they have hit three home runs in a game this season. VanScoter continued her offensive tear, going 3-4 at the plate with the homer, a double, a stolen base, two runs, and an RBI. Her double set a new program record. It was the 16
th of the season for VanScoter, which surpasses
Emily Cummings' record of 15 in the 2019 season. VanScoter leads the Crossroads League with a .519 batting average.
Game two was a pitcher's duel and lasted just an hour and twenty-five minutes. No teams had scored until the bottom of the fifth when VanScoter hit a solo home run to left-center.

Starting pitcher Alyssa Hartman was still on the mound in the seventh when Bethel began to creep back up. They scored their first run of the game on a wild pitch, and then Bella Rose hit an RBI single. Emmie Pugh had a couple of hits that were barely foul on both sides of the field, but she eventually flew out, and Goshen escaped with a 3-2 win.
Hartman earned the win and moves to 3-4 this season. She allowed two earned runs in seven innings with three strikeouts. VanScoter had another three-hit game and now has back-to-back games with home runs.
Claire Ouellette also had three hits – she has a .415 batting average this year in 41 at-bats.
With the win in game one, Bethel has won this year's edition of the U.S. Highway 20 cup rivalry. They have scored 7.75 points out of a possible 15, while Goshen has 3.75. There are still more matchups with the Pilots in baseball, softball, and men's and women's outdoor track and field. The baseball team hosts Bethel on April 7 and 9.
Goshen is now 15-13 overall and 5-9 in the Crossroads League. The Leafs play at Mount Vernon Nazarene on Thursday, April 7, at 1:00 pm. These games were initially scheduled for Wednesday but were moved back to Thursday. The next home games are Saturday, April 9, against Marian at 1:00 pm.
