GOSHEN, Ind. – After a 2-0 deficit at the half, Goshen men's soccer was able to cut the lead but couldn't ultimately make it up. Michigan-Dearborn beat the Maple Leafs at home on Saturday afternoon, 2-1.
Goshen had numerous chances, but Wolverines goalkeeper Elijah Burke displayed nine saves and allowed just one goal in ninety minutes of action.
Lucas Bontreger and
Henrique Eichenberger each had three shots on goal for the Leafs.
Michigan-Dearborn had their goals come one after another in the first half. Christian Cole hit one off the post and in during the 26
th minute and added a second one in the 30
th minute off of a corner kick play.
Goshen's goal also came off of a corner kick.
Eli Simones fed a beautiful ball to
Samuel Marchi, whose header cut the lead in half. A transfer from William Penn, this was Marchi's first career goal as a Leaf. Despite the goal with 21:13 to go, GC couldn't get another one through, and 2-1 was the final.
Goshen had 16 shots and ten on goal, but Burke's nine saves made the difference. Goshen had five more corner-kick opportunities than the Wolverines, and both teams had ten fouls.
On Wednesday, August 31, Goshen will travel to Holy Cross College for a 3:00 pm start.
