NOTRE DAME, Ind. - It was a fast-paced affair when the Maple Leafs men's soccer team played the Holy Cross College Saints on Wednesday afternoon. Goshen goalkeeper
Matias da Fonseca made 14 saves, but the Saints had 18 shots on goal and won 4-2.
The game's first goal came after an offsides call against Holy Cross, but the Saints' David Ross created a takeaway and had open space in front of him as he found an opening on the left side of the goal. About eight minutes later, in the 16th minute, da Fonseca made a tremendous save that resulted in a corner kick for HCC. The laser of a kick was stopped by Gabe Nyenka and put through the net by Tristan Alfaro.
Goshen got on the board when
Wendo Kisila found
Luiz Matteus Pontes for an easy goal after Isaias Rubio was out of the net. The score was 2-1 in favor of the home team going into halftime.
The goal-scoring pattern was the same in the second half as the first - with two home team goals before one by the Leafs. Off of a corner kick, Erick Zelaya turned and shot the Saints' third goal, and less than five minutes later, Jeffrey Harper maneuvered past da Fonseca to tap in the fourth Holy Cross goal.
In the 78th minute, first-year
Eli Simones scored on a header that was tipped by the keeper but went off the post and in.
Lucas Bontreger earned the assist on the cross. This is the first collegiate goal for Simones. He also had an assist in Goshen's last game against Michigan-Dearborn.
Despite allowing four goals, da Fonseca made 14 saves on 18 shots on goal from the Saints. The Saints also shot accurately, as 18 of their 25 shots were on target. Goshen took 17 shots and landed five on goal.
Now at 0-2-1, Goshen returns home on Saturday, September 3, to take on St. Francis (Ill.) at 5:00 pm.
