Leafs go down twice in second day of tri-match

Goshen finished weekend with five of top ten players in kills per set

GOSHEN, Ind. – On day two of the Goshen College Tri-Match, the Maple Leafs lost to Rochester in three sets and to Calumet College of St. Joseph in four sets. CCSJ beat Rochester in their matchup today in five sets (19-25, 30-28, 25-19, 22-25, 15-12).
 
Rochester hit .381 as a team in the first set win over Goshen, 25-13. Goshen regrouped and showed a better hitting percentage and more kills in the second set than the Warriors, but Rochester still won the set 25-22. They concluded the three-set win with a 25-20 performance. Rochester had 13 aces as a team, with seven coming in the first set. Goshen won the kills (37-34) and assists (35-32) categories, and both teams had 51 digs to their credit.
 
Kassidy Faler led all players on the court with 19 digs. Gwyn Bellamy and Emily Lynch had nine kills each, and Sydney Stutsman had two aces.
 
Against Calumet in the tournament's final match, the Leafs lost the first set by four before winning the second set 25-23. The Crimson Wave had another 25-21 win in the third set, and then the teams went back and forth in the fourth.
 
Goshen scored the first four, and Calumet scored the four after that. There were 15 ties in the set, but CCSJ scored the final two to win 26-24 and take the match.
 
Christina Towne and Stutsman each had two aces, and Amy Baca added three blocks. Lynch, Bellamy, and Kia Knox-Dawkins all had double-digit kills, and Faler totaled 27 digs.
 
Among all three teams and six matches this weekend, Goshen had five of the top ten players in points per set - Lynch (2.66), Baca (2.47), Sadie Brenneman (2.44), Knox-Dawkins (2.38), and Bellamy (2.00). Goshen also had five of the top ten leaders in kills per set - Lynch (2.44), Brenneman (2.31), Baca (2.19), Knox-Dawkins (2.19), and Bellamy (1.86). Stutsman's four aces against Calumet were the highest for any player in a single match this weekend.
 
The Leafs will compete in the Racer Classic at the University of Northwestern Ohio next weekend. On Friday, September 2, they face Stephens College at 6:00 pm and UNOH at 8:00 pm. On Saturday, September 3, Goshen will take on Lawrence Tech at 11:00 am before challenging Montreat College (N.C.) at 1:00 pm.
