LIMA, Ohio - The Goshen women's volleyball team stretched both of their opponents to their limits on Friday evening at the Racer Classic held at Elida High School. Goshen took Stephens College (Mo.) to five sets and had two long sets with Northwestern Ohio in a three set loss.
The Stephens Stars took the first two sets, 25-14 and 25-22. Goshen had to rally from behind and showed tremendous fight by winning the next two sets 25-22 and 25-21. Goshen had 19 kills in the fourth set - the most kills that either team had in a single set during the match.
In the fifth set, the Stars held a 13-10 lead before kills by
Emily Lynch,
Iva Miletic, and
Gwyn Bellamy tied the teams up. However, Stephens scored the next two and left with a 15-13 win in the fifth set.
Goshen had 61 kills compared to 50 for Stephens. The Leafs also had more assists, 59-48. Lynch finished with 22 kills and
Jaelyn Amhdar had 35 assists.
Goshen took on the host school, Northwestern Ohio, in their second match of the day. In the first set, a 7-0 run put Goshen in the driver's seat as they turned a two point deficit into a 16-11 lead. The Racers immediately came back though, and the teams went back and forth as an
Amy Baca kill from Amhdar tied it at 25. A couple of kills for UNOH gave them the win at 29-27.
The Racers stormed to a quick 10-2 lead in the second set, which later extended to 16-7. Goshen followed with a 6-1 run, but UNOH held on for a 25-19 win. Goshen was in control for most of the third set, leading 24-21 until Northwestern Ohio scored four straight points. The Leafs got one when they needed it, but the host eventually won the set by a 29-27 score again, and took the match in the process.
Amy Baca had five solo blocks - a career-high. Goshen had nine as a team. Northwestern Ohio improves to 6-4 this year.
On Saturday, Goshen will take on two more opponents in day two at the Racer Classic. The Maple Leafs face Lawrence Tech at 11:00 am and Montreat College (N.C.) at 1:00 pm.
