GOSHEN, Ind. – Felipe Carli scored an incredible goal with a second to go in the first half against Madonna, but the Crusaders came back to win 3-2 in Goshen on Saturday afternoon.
The teams were tied in the first half at 0-0 for all but a second of the action. As the clock was ticking down, the Madonna goalkeeper chased down a ball and fell as he cleared the ball away. Carli controlled it at midfield and fired a strike from just outside the circle as the goalie tried to get back in place. It found the back of the net before the half ended, and Goshen was on the board.
Goshen also scored the next goal when
Mathurin Allawai dribbled around a defender on the right side and fed a pass to
Lucas Bontreger. Bontreger just needed one touch as he put it in the net. Carli and Bontreger each have two goals this season.
The momentum changed after this point, as Madonna scored less than five minutes later from a cross on the left side that found its way between both teams. With just over minutes remaining, the Crusaders scored on a corner. Andres Gomez Rubiano found Ren Suzuki, who fired a shot just under the crossbar. Then a third goal was scored on a 30-yard shot from Ryushin Hirami that deflected off a Maple Leafs defender and went in. Goshen could not tie things up in the closing minutes, and the final score was 3-2.
Madonna had 22 shots, and Goshen had eight.
Matias da Fonseca made eight saves for GC. Five different players took each of Goshen's five shots on goal.
Goshen (0-4-2) is at Georgetown College (Ky.) on Wednesday, September 14, at 7:00 pm. The Leafs host Brescia on Saturday, September 17, at 7:00 pm.
