LIMA, Ohio - On the second day of the Racer Classic, the Goshen women's volleyball team picked up win number two for the season. The Maple Leafs defeated Montreat (N.C.) in three sets after losing to Lawrence Tech in three.
Lawrence Tech won the 11:00 am match 25-17, 25-17, 25-22. The Blue Devils had a hitting percentage of .218 compared to .067 for the Leafs. Goshen led 18-15 in the third set but LTU ended the match on a 10-4 run. Lawrence Tech improved to 6-5 this season after the win.
Against Montreat, Goshen had to compete in the first two sets before a more dominant finish in the third.
Goshen held a 16-11 lead in the opening set but Montreat scored 13 of the next 18 points to have set point at 24-21. However, a block from first-years
Kia Knox-Dawkins and
Brenna Spangler kept Goshen alive.
Christina Towne served the next three points as the Cavaliers made a series of errors that gave Goshen a one point lead. Montreat scored once more, but the Leafs left with a 27-25 win.
GC had an even larger lead in the second set when they got off to a 17-8 start. But the Cavaliers rallied again, going on a 17-7 run to take a 25-24 lead. A kill from
Emily Lynch kept Goshen alive, and late errors by Montreat led to Goshen winning in similar fashion as the first set, 28-26.
In the third set, Goshen made sure they didn't lose a sizable lead for a third time. The Maple Leafs won 25-15 with 15 kills and just one error in the set.
Sadie Brenneman finished the match with 16 kills and Towne had three aces.
Jaelyn Amhdar had 21 assists and
Sydney Stutsman added 18 more. Goshen had a .275 hitting percentage - the team's best for a match this season. Their 10 block assists was also a season high.
Now at 2-8, Goshen plays at Grace on Wednesday, September 7, at 7:00 pm. On Friday and Saturday, Goshen will play in the Liz Lykowski Memorial Tournament hosted by Indiana Tech.
