GOSHEN, Ind. – For the first time in a decade, six different Maple Leafs scored in the same game as Goshen defeated West Virginia Tech 6-0 at the GC Soccer Complex on Labor Day afternoon.
Lexy Adamczyk,
Seja Lang,
Rhiannon Holmes,
Anita Tavares,
Madalyne Swallow, and
Orsi Tatai were the six goal scorers for the Leafs. 2012 was the last time GC had that many goal scorers in a game. In a 12-1 win over Andrews on September 11
th that year, Goshen had seven different goal scorers and outshot the Cardinals 56-3. Dana Christner scored four goals off the bench in that game.
Today's game marked the second consecutive shutout for Goshen – the first time that has happened since the first two games of 2021. The Goshen defense allowed the Golden Bears to get just two shots off in the first half, and Grace Garcia had five saves during her 90 minutes in goal.
Lang scored her third goal since Saturday in the 15
th minute as
Anita Tavares' shot was blocked and rebounded by Lang. Holmes scored less than six minutes later with an impressive lob over the keeper. Then with just 64 seconds remaining in half, Adamczyk scored on a through ball from
Amy Drew to put the Leafs up 3-0 at the break – her first career goal.
Tavares scored the game's fourth goal from a free kick in the 56
th minute. Swallow scored her fourth goal of the season in the 70
th minute, assisted by Drew. Lastly, Tatai put in a loose ball from the left side of the box in the 73
rd minute. This was her first career goal and the last for the Leafs on a historic day.
This was Goshen's first-ever matchup with West Virginia Tech. The Leafs had season highs in saves (5, also a career-high for Garcia), corner kicks (10, also more than any two games combined this season), and offsides (15). The 22 shots by Goshen are the second most of the season.
Now sporting a 3-2 record, Goshen plays at Madonna on Saturday, September 10, at 5:00 pm.
