FORT WAYNE, Ind. - Despite scoring the first goal against Indiana Tech all season, the #14 Warriors men's soccer team defeated Goshen 2-1 in Fort Wayne on Wednesday night. This was the first meeting between the teams since 2017. Indiana Tech had three 0-0 ties to start the year.
The Warriors picked up their first goal of the season precisely nine minutes in as Aaron Asamoah sent a cross from the right side, and David Ambaek scored on one touch. However, they also allowed their first goal of the season just minutes before halftime.
Lucas Bontreger secured the ball from going out of bounds along the left sideline and crossed it over to the right side of the field to
Emmanuel Fakoyede. Fakoyede put it through for his first goal of the year.
A Goshen foul in the 59th minute forced an Indiana Tech free kick just outside the box. The kick from Luke Jones went just over the Goshen wall and past the outstretched arm of
Matias da Fonseca to put Indiana Tech back in the lead.
The Leafs had a chance to tie it up with four and a half minutes to go, but a header by
Wendo Kisila bounced off the crossbar.
Lucas Bontreger had a shot in the final minute after a Goshen corner kick but couldn't get enough power behind it. The Warriors escaped with a 2-1 win.
Kisila led the team with three shots. Bontreger and Fakoyede each had two. Da Fonseca made two saves in goal. Each team recorded four shots on goal.
On deck for the Maple Leafs is Madonna on Saturday, September 10. The teams will square off at the GC Soccer Complex starting at 3:00 pm.
