INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. - The Goshen women's volleyball team ended a 27-set losing streak against Marian on Wednesday night, but the Knights, who are receiving votes in the most recent coaches poll, were able to win 3-1 and improved to 10-3 in the Crossroads League. The Maple Leafs last won a set against Marian on September 4, 2019.
The teams traded runs at the start of the first set. Marian took the first five points, Goshen took the next six, Marian won the next seven of eight before Goshen won three of the next four points. But the Knights scored more at the end to win the first set 25-19. Goshen was down 14-9 in the second set and the squads were tied 21-21 late before the Leafs scored four of the last six points - with two coming from kills by
Emily Lynch.
Marian quickly went up 16-6 in the third set, but Goshen didn't back down and pulled within two at 17-15. The Knights answered back by finishing the set on an 8-3 run. It was looking like GC might snag another set when they went up 4-1 early in the fourth set and even had a late rally when down eight, but Marian won 25-18 and won the match 3-1.
After three straight matches with less than ten digs,
Alaina Wolfe totaled 19 tonight - her highest total since a five-set match on September 20 at Spring Arbor.
Sadie Brenneman,
Christina Towne,
Emily Lynch and
Bailee Brown all had at least nine kills each for the Maple Leafs. Brenneman had a .385 hitting percentage and eight digs.
Kelsie Hankins and
Gwyn Bellamy had 14 digs each. Towne and
Brenna Spangler each had three block assists and Hankins guided the attack with 30 assists.
Goshen hosts #25 Mount Vernon Nazarene on Friday, October 20, at 7:00 pm before hosting Huntington on Saturday at 3:00 pm for Senior Day.
