GOSHEN, Ind. - After being down two sets to none, the Goshen women's volleyball team nearly came back all the way but lost in the fifth set to Saint Francis. The Cougars won 25-12, 25-23, 23-25, 23-25, 15-12.
Goshen had 16 blocks compared to three for USF.
Bailee Brown had ten block assists and a solo block, topping her previous season-high eight blocks in a match.
The Cougars dominated the first set with a .476 hitting percentage. They led the second set 24-20, but Goshen had three points in a row, with kills coming from
Christina Towne and
Sadie Brenneman. But after taking a timeout, USF won the last point to win the set 25-23.
Goshen went up 6-3 in the third set and maintained the lead when the score got tight. After being down 15-7 in the fourth set, GC rattled off six points in a row to pull within two. Later, when they were down 23-20, the Maple Leafs finished the set on a 5-0 run to win 25-23 with an ace from
Alaina Wolfe to end it.
The 7-3 Saint Francis lead to start the fifth set proved crucial, as Goshen couldn't entirely fend off the early deficit. Even though Goshen had nine kills and no attack errors in the final set, they lost 15-12.
Alaina Wolfe had five aces and 16 digs for the Cougars.
Sadie Brenneman,
Emily Lynch, and
Bailee Brown had double-digit kills.
Kelsie Hankins had 44 assists, and
Christina Towne totaled ten digs.
Goshen finishes their stretch of five straight home games on Saturday when they host IU-South Bend at 7:00 pm during Homecoming Weekend.
