GOSHEN, Ind. - On Homecoming Weekend and when the 1973 Goshen men's soccer team was being recognized, the 2023 Goshen men's soccer team tied #15 Indiana Wesleyan 1-1.
Stephen Bandi scored Goshen's goal in the 36th minute of play. A sophomore from Nairobi, Kenya, Bandi was playing in just his second contest of the season. His goal was his first, and so far only, shot attempt this season. Goshen held their 1-0 lead for a long time, Â but the Wildcats eventually found the back of the net in the 78th minute on a goal from Winter Casseus assisted by Brandon Nyagurungo. IWU had 12 corner kicks in the game compared to none for Goshen. The Leafs had nine shots and four on goal. Indiana Wesleyan was 10-1-1 going into the match.
Ruam Barbosa made 11 saves in goal for Goshen. It was his second start of the year after getting the nod against Rochester on September 13, when Goshen also played to a 1-1 score. Three of Goshen's four shots on goal came from substitutes going into the game - Bandi,
Luiz Matteus Pontes and
Eduardo Curvo.
Jorge Silva had the other.
Goshen is at Mount Vernon Nazarene on Wednesday, October 11, at 7:00 pm.
The 1973 men's soccer team was recognized at halftime of the game. Below, you can see what was read about the team.
Good afternoon, fans. I am pleased to introduce the 1973 Men's Soccer Team that went to the NAIA National Soccer Finals and finished fifth in the nation! Â
Â
The team closed the season with an overall record of 14 wins and three losses. They tied for the Mid-Central Conference lead and won the District 21 and Area 4 championships, one of eight teams to qualify for the NAIA Nationals in Florissant, Missouri. Their fifth-place finish is the best of any Goshen College national finalist in soccer.Â
Â
Goshen lost the first game to the second-seeded team in the tournament, then won the next two games, both decided by penalty kicks. Â Our penalty kickers made nine of 10 kicks, and our goalie saved three of eight penalty kicks. Â After 6" of rain the night before, the final game was played on a field with ankle-deep puddles. Â The game was described as a muddy version of water polo.
