GOSHEN, Ind. - Sophia Yoder had a strong showing in her Maple Leaf debut with two goals as Goshen took down Cleary 4-0 in the 2023 season opener.
Yoder scored just six minutes into the game on an assist from
Lexy Adamczyk. The other three GC goals came in the second half.
Seja Lang scored with her left foot to the right side of the goal on a through ball from
Laura Castro. Seventy-four minutes in, Yoder connected again on a pass forward by
Amy Drew from a giveaway. She lobbed it over the keeper for goal number two. Yoder is a first-year forward from Stow, Ohio. The last came from midfielder
Klara Ebert when the Cleary goalkeeper came far out of the box. She just had enough power on it as the ball rolled across the goal line for Goshen's fourth of the day.
Goshen had 20 total shots with 12 on frame, whereas Cleary had seven total and three on goal. The Cougars had five yellow cards, all in the second half. Yoder finished with six shots and four on goal. She became the first freshman to do so in a season opener since at least 2008.
Katie Sauder, Lang, Ebert, and Adamczyk also had multiple shots.
Victoria Naylor was Goshen's goalkeeper for most of the game and had one save.
Gracie Garcia played the last eight minutes and made two saves.
Goshen is at Cornerstone next Saturday with a 4:00 pm start time in Grand Rapids.
