GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. - First-year
Sophia Yoder continued her scoring spree as the Maple Leafs women's soccer team disrupted Cornerstone's home season opener on Saturday afternoon with a 2-1 victory. Yoder now has four goals this season, leading all Crossroads League players as the Leafs moved to 2-0.
Goshen controlled the possession early on but didn't have their first shot until over 25 minutes into the game. By then, Cornerstone already had four shots, and
Victoria Naylor had made two saves. However, the first Goshen shot connected, as
Seja Lang passed the ball to Yoder for the goal. Cornerstone outshot GC 7-2 in the first half and 14-6 for the match. But five of Goshen's six shots were on goal.
The Golden Eagles tied it up in the 57th minute on a goal from Gracie Gortmaker. But ten minutes later, Yoder scored her second to put the Leafs on top again.
Gracie Garcia was the second-half goalie for Goshen and made four saves. In addition to Yoder,
Klara Ebert,
Anita Tavares and
Lexy Adamczyk had shots on goal. Naylor is one of four Crossroads League goalies who have played at least 90 minutes this season and not allowed a goal.
There are plenty of chances to watch the undefeated Maple Leafs in Goshen, as their next four contests will be at home. The next one up is against Holy Cross College on Wednesday, August 30, at 6:00 pm. The men follow against the same opponent at 8:00 pm.
