GOSHEN, Ind. - In front of 190 fans for the home season opener, the Goshen women's volleyball team swept Calumet College of Saint Joseph 3-0. Head coach Jeff Phillips won his coaching debut with the Leafs, being the first GC volleyball coach to win their debut since Jim Routhier on August 28, 2009.
The match was delayed after the visitors faced bus issues on their way to the Maple City, but it didn't bother the Maple Leafs. Goshen went on a 4-0 run to go up 11-7 and held the lead until the end of the first set. Goshen had a six-point lead in the second set, but Calumet rallied, and it was tied at 23 apiece. A service error and an attack error from the Crimson Wave led to Goshen taking the set 25-23. GC had a 7-0 run in the third, but CCSJ returned yet again to tie it at 19. However, the Leafs ended the set, and the match, on a 6-2 run.
Goshen dominated the aces category 8-1 and blocks 6-1.
Emily Lynch had nine kills and two block assists,
Kelsie Hankins totaled three aces and 19 assists, and
Kassidy Faler had ten digs.
Amy Baca had four block assists and a solo block. She was recognized before the match since it was her last home contest as a Maple Leaf. You can read what was said below.
Goshen is at Aquinas on Friday, August 25, for a tri-match. The Leafs face Aquinas at 3:00 pm and then meet Calumet again at 5:00 pm.
Amy Baca Senior Night
Fans, we would now like to take a moment to recognize a women's volleyball senior.Â
Amy Baca will leave for her marine biology classes in the Florida Keys on August 28.
Amy has played in 80 matches and 235 sets as a Maple Leaf. She has 270 kills, 16 aces and 209 digs in her collegiate career. Amy has been a force at the net, affectionately earning her the nickname Amy Blocka. She has 75 block assists and 22 solo blocks, with 21 coming last season. Coach Phillips says, "Amy is the type of player every coach wants in the gym. Â She works hard, and she brings the type of energy that spreads to her teammates. We will miss her, but we understand that her goals in life are bigger than volleyball. She has done everything we have asked and contributed to our team and program throughout her time at Goshen. She deserves all of her success." Fans, please give a round of applause for senior
