GOSHEN, Ind. - In their home opener, the Maple Leafs men's soccer team lost to #20 Olivet Nazarene by a score of 2-0. The Tigers were 16-2-3 last season with a 9-0-3 conference record.
The Leafs had a few early shot attempts in the first 20 minutes.
Eli Simones had an attempt saved by the keeper,
Tim Wilkening had a shot go wide left and
Tebello Ntene sent one over the crossbar. The Tigers also had their fair share of chances and connected nearly 30 minutes in on a goal by Maarten Gravekamp. Goshen had three shots in the first half but doubled it with six in the second.
Aidan Twohig had two shots early in the half, and efforts from
John Mlondani and
Lars Razor Jr. also came in the first 11 minutes of the half. Olivet Nazarene scored their second goal in the 60th minute to extend the lead to two. GC held them scoreless for the last half hour but couldn't add any to their total, resulting in a 2-0 final score.
Gregor Rommelspacher made eight saves for the Maple Leafs. Twohig had two shots on goal. Eight different subs got into the game for Goshen.
The Tigers averaged 3.10 goals per contest a season ago.
