GOSHEN, Ind. - First-half goals from
Katie Sauder and
Madalyne Swallow guided the Maple Leafs to a 3-0 record to start the 2023 season. It is the first time the women's soccer program has won their first three games of the season since 2011.
Sauder scored in the 19th minute as she dribbled away from the approaching goalkeeper inside the eighteen. After a pivot to the left, she had an easy tap-in goal to put the Leafs on the board. The Saints answered back just two minutes and eight seconds later when Olivia Shaw took a deep shot that was perfectly placed right under the crossbar.
Yet Goshen recovered less than ten minutes later.
Madalyne Swallow got around her defender, and after a touch, she landed a shot past the keeper for the second GC goal on the day.
Both teams had more shots in the second half, but neither put any more in as the Leafs won 2-1. They each finished with eight shots on goal.
Amy Drew had half of Goshen's shots on goal and had the assist on Swallow's goal.
Seja Lang took two shots and had the assist for Sauder's goal.
Victoria Naylor had seven saves in the full ninety minutes that she played. She has a save percentage of .917 this season and is allowing 0.41 goals per game.
Goshen lost at Holy Cross last year 2-0 but is now 7-1 against them since 2009. The Leafs have outscored their opponents 8-2 this year.
You can continue to watch the Leafs in action at home on Saturday, September 2, at 4:00 pm against Brescia.
