Goshen ends 20-set losing streak to USF but falls in four

GC rallied from being down 24-20 in fourth but lost the final set 26-24

FORT WAYNE, Ind. - The Goshen offense was strong in the second set against Saint Francis on Wednesday night in Fort Wayne. Yet the Cougars were able to control three other sets in a four-set win that put them at 1-1 in the Crossroads League.

After losing the first set with eight attack errors, the Leafs reversed course in the second. Goshen had 12 kills and no errors in that frame, with a .545 hitting percentage. They won the set 25-15. Saint Francis rallied in the third with a 25-18 victory and led 24-20 late in the fourth set. The Leafs didn't let in, however, and capitalized on a couple of USF attack errors, a kill from Gwyn Bellamy and an ace from Alaina Wolfe. But after tying it at 24 apiece, the Cougars took the following two points to win 26-24.

The win in the second set ended a 20-set losing streak that the Maple Leafs had against the Cougars - their last time taking a set was on October 23, 2019. Alaina Wolfe had four aces, her second-highest total this season. Sadie Brenneman led all players with 17 kills. Christina Towne and Brenna Spangler combined for six total blocks, and Wolfe and Kelsie Hankins combined for 32 digs.

Goshen (7-7, 0-2 CL) is back home for the first time since their season opener on Friday, September 15, against Indiana Wesleyan at 7:00 pm.
