WINONA LAKE, Ind. - The Goshen women's volleyball team started Crossroads League play on the road on Wednesday night. Grace won in four sets to improve to 7-1 as the Leafs dropped to 6-3.
The Lancers were dominant in the first set, doubling Goshen's number of assists and winning 25-13. The Maple Leafs settled in after that and won the second set 25-23. Goshen played well in the third set, matching the second set with another 13 kills, but they lost 25-20. And though they had a late push in the fourth set, GC could not come back as the home team won it 25-19.
The second-set win ended a 10-set losing skid for the Leafs in Winona Lake. The trio of
Emily Lynch,
Sadie Brenneman and
Gwyn Bellamy each had 11 kills.
Alaina Wolfe had 17 digs - her fourth straight match with 15 or more digs.
Kelsie Hankins totaled 34 assists, and
Bailee Brown had two block assists.
Grace was 4-4 through their first eight matches last year but has seen an improvement in the record from a year ago, just as Goshen has. The Leafs get into the heart of the Crossroads League schedule starting next Wednesday. But until then, they will compete in four matches at the Liz Lykowski Memorial Tournament at Indiana Tech this weekend. They begin by facing Indiana Tech on Friday, September 8, at 2:00 pm. They meet Saint Ambrose later that evening at 6:00 pm.
