MOUNT VERNON, Ohio - Goshen held a nine-point lead in the first set and on the road against the 24-3 Mount Vernon Nazarene Cougars, but MVNU recovered to win in three, 25-19, 25-16, 25-21.
Goshen was up 13-4 early, with seven points coming from Mount Vernon attack errors and another one on a service error.
Sadie Brenneman and
Bianca Hobson each had two kills to that point and
Jaelyn Amhdar had an ace. However, the Cougars went on a 14-0 run to take a 20-14 lead. They held that six-point advantage with a 25-19 win.
The home team scored nine of the first 11 points in the next set and won 25-16. Goshen led 5-4 in the third when MVNU won six of the next seven. The Leafs hung around but fell short by four.
Goshen had a strong .393 hitting percentage in the third set but the Cougars had their best in that set as well at .353. Goshen had the edge on blocks 6-5, with 12 block assists compared to six for Mount Vernon Nazarene. The Leafs last two matches have produced their highest block assist totals in league play this season. The Cougars dominated the kills category by 23 and doubled Goshen's assist total.
Armani Guidry-Austin had four block assists while
Bianca Hobson and
Ava Egolf had two each.
Sadie Brenneman had 12 kills and just one attack error with a .367 hitting percentage and nine digs.
Alaina Wolfe had 21 digs and
Kelsie Hankins had 12 with 16 assists. Wolfe's 21 digs are the most she has had in a Crossroads League match this season.
Goshen hosts Huntington on Wednesday, October 30, at 8:00 pm. The GC women's soccer team will be at home at 6:00 pm that night as well.
