Cougars stifle Goshen's offense, defeat Leafs in Mount Vernon

Goshen had more rebounds and fewer turnovers than MVNU

MOUNT VERNON, Ohio - Goshen fell to Mount Vernon Nazarene 90-69 on Wednesday at Ariel Arena.

The first half saw the Cougars establish an early lead, going up 17-7. And although the Leafs were neck-and-neck with MVNU for the rest of the half, that early advantage resulted in Mount Vernon holding a 41-30 lead by the end of the half. Goshen was only shooting 34% from the field to Mount Vernon's 44%, but they had the rebounding edge by +4, including ten first-half offensive rebounds.

In the second half, Richard Wilson attempted to keep pace, scoring several times and assisting in trimming the deficit. His nine rebounds were his second-most in a game this season. However, the home team maintained a strong lead. Andre Bradford's performance included a timely three-pointer with 8:14 remaining, bringing Goshen within 14 points, yet Mount Vernon's efficiency in scoring, particularly in the paint, kept them ahead with a final half score of 49-39.

Wilson led the team with 16 points and added nine rebounds. Marcus Northern also contributed significantly, scoring 16 points while hitting 3-6 from beyond the arc. This marked his most points in a game since February 3rd last season when he scored 17 points, also at Mount Vernon. Andre Bradford recorded two steals and added nine points. Judah Simfukwe provided support with eight points, all in the first half.

Goshen's seven turnovers tied for a season-low, MVNU had ten during the game. The Maple Leafs managed a +1 rebound margin tonight, a significant improvement from their -52 margin in the first two league games combined against Saint Francis and Bethel.

The Leafs host Marian on Saturday at 3:00 pm.
