Leafs hang with #2 team in the NAIA but come up short

Goshen had a quick 13-2 lead in the game

GOSHEN, Ind. - The Goshen women's basketball team played some of their best basketball of the year on Wednesday night against the #2 team in the NAIA. The Leafs were in a two-possession game in the final few minutes but lost 68-58. Marian is now 13-0 in the Crossroads League, and Goshen is 4-9.

The Leafs quickly jumped to a 13-2 lead to start the game, and Marian had to use a timeout when they were trailing 10-2. GC had a 20-12 lead at the quarter's end, and the Knights didn't have their first lead until there were under two minutes to go in the second quarter.

Goshen retook the lead on a three from Zion Neat with 3:29 to go in the third, but Marian took it back not long after. The Leafs cut it down to five in the fourth quarter but couldn't quite complete what would have been a massive upset.

Goshen shot 64% in the first quarter. Syanne Mohamed had a double-double with 16 points and 11 rebounds. Zion Neat scored 11, and Zoe Zellers had 10 with seven boards and three blocks - a career-high. Ava Lickliter had a team-high five assists, and Sophia Eli scored nine points in just 12 minutes off the bench. Just over a month ago, Goshen lost at Marian 92-54.

The team is back in action on Saturday, February 10, at 1:00 pm at Grace.
