Ntene scores fourth goal in five days but Maple Leafs lose to Tigers in Illinois

Goshen had 18 shots but only three shots on goal

BOURBONNAIS, Ill. - Tebello Ntene scored his fourth goal in the last five days, but a strong second-half surge by Olivet Nazarene resulted in a 4-1 win for the Tigers over the Maple Leafs.

ONU was on the board early. With a pass from Kurodo Ihara, Nathan Schmidli scored just over three minutes into the game. However, the Maple Leafs produced many offensive chances of their own. Goshen had already taken three shots nine minutes into the game, one being a rocket from Adrian Gonzalez Martinez that just went wide. Schmidli nearly had a second goal of the game 15 minutes in, but a terrific save from Gregor Rommelspacher prevented it. Philip Jorgensen had a chance that hit the post for ONU, and the home team had another good opportunity two minutes before the half ended. However, Rommelspacher saved the header from a corner after a bounce. It was still just 1-0 at halftime, and Goshen led in the shots category 9-4.

Early in the second half, Stephen Bandi made a cross inside the 18 and after a mess in front of the keeper, a foul was called inside the box. Tebello Ntene took the Goshen penalty kick, and though the keeper dived in the direction he had sent it, the shot was placed just inside the post, and it found the back of the net. It's Ntene's fourth goal in five days after his hat trick performance on Saturday during a 4-1 win over Concordia.

Goshen's lead didn't last for long. Fifty seconds later, Olivet Nazarene scored on a set piece and they added another four minutes after that. Their fourth goal came less than five minutes after the third when the Goshen defense was caught sleeping, and Kurodo Ihara received a solid pass on the left side with an open shot in front of him.

Goshen took eight more shots in the match than ONU, but only three of the GC shots were on goal. Comparatively, six of Olivet Nazarene's ten shots were on target. The Leafs had seven corner kicks and the Tigers had four. ONU had five yellow cards, and GC had a total of four.

Ntene finished with four shots and one on goal. Mario Perez, Tim Wilkening, Adrian Gonzalez Martinez, Kingsley Kanu and Mathurin Allawai also took multiple shots. Gregor Rommelspacher finished with two saves. Goshen scored seven times in their first four games, contrasting with the one goal they scored after last season's first four games.

The Maple Leafs are next at Holy Cross College on Wednesday, September 4, at 6:00 pm.
