SAINT MARY-OF-THE-WOODS, Ind. - Goshen won two of their three matches on Friday's first day of the Showdown in the Woods at Saint Mary-of-the-Woods College. Goshen beat Franklin College in three, lost to IU Columbus in three and then came back to beat Alice Lloyd College in three.
Goshen vs Franklin College
The Maple Leafs won their second three-set sweep when they defeated Franklin 25-19, 25-15, 25-17. Goshen created some separation in the first set on a 5-0 run.
Brenna Spangler had a kill and an ace as the first two points, and by the end of the run, Goshen led 16-7. Both teams had fewer attack errors in the second set, but Goshen had an even more impressive .421 hitting percentage in the set. The Leafs were just as dominant in their 25-17 third-set win.
Goshen had seven aces in the quick three-set match.
Brenna Spangler and
Alaina Wolfe had two each.
Bailee Brown had a career-high 13 kills and
Kelsie Hankins had 22 assists.
Goshen vs IU Columbus
The second match went the other way, as Goshen was swept in three despite losing two sets by two points each. IU Columbus quickly went up 8-1 in the first set. Goshen outscored them 22-17 the rest of the way, but it wasn't enough to rally from the early deficit.
The Lions started with a 4-0 advantage in the second set. Goshen had a 7-0 run with three
Sadie Brenneman aces later in the set to take an 11-9 lead, but IU Columbus prevailed again by two. The third set was the widest margin for the Lions, winning 25-18.
Brenneman had 12 kills for Goshen, no other Maple Leaf had more than five. Brenneman had just one attack error and a .500 hitting percentage with five aces and three digs.
Goshen vs Alice Lloyd College
The Leafs recuperated and needed just three sets against the Eagles of Alice Lloyd College. The first set was a dominant 25-13 win - Alice Lloyd had just three kills in the set. Goshen had 15 kills in the second set, though they had to work harder to get the win. With an 8-4 Goshen lead, the Eagles scored three in a row to pull within one. After that point, there were numerous ties. But whenever Alice Lloyd scored, Goshen always came back with an answer. GC maintained the narrow lead all the way to the end, winning 25-22.
Goshen went up 13-5 in the third set and held steady the rest of the way toward a nine-point third-set win, 25-16. Goshen's offensive attack was well-balanced, with five players totaling between four and six kills.
Ava Egolf had five kills and no attack errors on seven total attempts for a .714 hitting percentage.
Bailee Brown had six aces,
Kelsie Hankins had 25 assists, and
Jessie Price and
Alaina Wolfe each had seven digs.
The Maple Leafs (5-9) play Governors State at 11:00 am tomorrow - the start time was initially set for 9:00 am but was changed on Friday. Goshen finishes the Showdown in the Woods with a matchup later in the day against Clarke at 4:00 pm.
