Game Recap: Women's Soccer | | Justin DeWeese

Freshmen goals lead to first win of the year

After starting 0-5, Goshen is 1-0-2 in the last three games

GOSHEN, Ind. - Women's soccer earned their first win of the year and did so via a shutout. Goshen took down IU-Northwest 2-0 at home on Saturday night with goals from freshmen Karlee Ballast and Eliana Lang.

The RedHawks put up some early shot attempts, but the first goal came from the Leafs. Nearly 18 minutes in, Karlee Ballast received a cross from Brynja Hjartardottir on the right side and one-tapped it in to put the Leafs on the board. In the 41st minute, Madalyne Swallow sent one in that went off the goalkeeper's hands. Eliana Lang was at the right place at the right time. She positioned herself, controlled the ball with her chest, and then had an easy shot just a foot from the goal line.

The Leafs finished with 11 total shots and six on goal. IU-Northwest had nine shots and three on frame. Last year in Gary, the teams played to a 0-0 tie. After starting 0-5, Goshen is 1-0-2 in the previous three matches. This was the first game that Goshen had scored two goals in a win since September 4 last year against Carolina University.

After a scrimmage next weekend, Goshen hosts Huntington on Wednesday, September 25, at 7:00 pm. It will be the Leafs' first Crossroads League matchup of the season.
