Goshen loses at Bethel in three close sets

The Leafs had seven aces in the match

MISHAWAKA, Ind. - The Goshen women's volleyball team lost at Bethel on Wednesday night in three sets. The Pilots won all three by close scores - 25-22, 25-20, 25-23.

Both teams were 1-3 in league play going into the matchup, but Bethel had already faced Indiana Wesleyan, Mount Vernon Nazarene and Marian. Those three are currently a combined 13-2 in conference.

The Maple Leafs and Pilots combined for 32 kills in the first set alone. A Bethel ace midway through the first gave the Pilots a 16-11 lead, causing Goshen head coach Jeff Phillips to use a timeout. The Maple Leafs then scored six of the next seven points and tied it up 17-17. Bethel retook a two-point lead and Goshen tied it back at 22 all. However, Bethel had three kills to end the set and win 25-22.

Goshen looked strong starting the next set with an 11-4 advantage. But Bethel took their first lead in the set since it was 1-0 when they went up 19-18. They ended the set on a 4-0 run to win 25-20. The third had a 6-0 run from the home team followed by Goshen scoring six of seven. Bethel had another 6-0 run and the Leafs answered by scoring ten of the next 13 points. Goshen scored a couple of times when Bethel led 24-21, but the Pilots finally got the match point and won in three sets.

Sadie Brenneman led the Leafs with 11 kills and a .250 hitting percentage. She had two aces and 11 digs and Alaina Wolfe totaled three aces and 12 digs. Kelsie Hankins had 27 assists, and Bailee Brown scored seven kills and two aces.

Goshen hosts #16 Mount Vernon Nazarene on Saturday, September 21, at 3:00 pm. The Cougars lost their first match of the year on Wednesday at Indiana Wesleyan in three sets by a combined eight points.
