NOTRE DAME, Ind. - Although they outshot Holy Cross 17-6 and 12-3 in the second half, the Goshen women's soccer team lost to the Saints 2-1 on the road Tuesday evening.
Alessandra Aguilera scored Goshen's goal, her second this season.
Holy Cross scored two goals on just three shots in the first half. Abigail Fouts scored the first in the 21st minute and Cameron Fallacara had the next almost 33 minutes into the match. At the halftime whistle, Goshen had taken five shots but Saints goalkeeper Payton Ladson made three saves.
Both teams switched out their goalies after the break. Madeleine Agee came in for the home team and Goshen subbed out
Aina Lopez for
Makiah McCain. The Maple Leafs rattled off 12 shots over the course of the second half. Agee made four saves but Goshen scored on a penalty kick taken by
Alessandra Aguilera in the 88th minute. McCain only had to make one save in goal, but the Leafs couldn't muster enough offense after the 2-0 deficit.
Brynja Hjartardottir,
Alessandra Aguilera and
Sophia Yoder each had three shots on goal. Yoder led the team with five total shots taken. Goshen has two goals on 54 shots this season, meaning 3.7% of shots are goals. A year ago the team was at 8.3%, 9.8% in 2022 and 10.6% in 2021.
The Leafs are at Siena Heights on Saturday, September 7, with a 6:00 pm kickoff. The Saints are receiving votes in the coaches poll.
