Maple Leafs allow two penalty kick goals in first loss in 39 days

Goshen's last loss came on August 23 at Madonna

UPLAND, Ind. - For the first time since August 23, the Goshen men's soccer team lost a match, dropping their record to 6-2-3. The Leafs allowed two penalty kick goals in a 3-1 loss on the road at Taylor on Wednesday night.

The first goal of the match was a penalty kick, as Justin Devlin scored his third goal of the season in the 25th minute. They score stayed 1-0 through halftime, but the Trojans upped their lead to 2-0 with a 73rd minute goal by Carlos Sanabria.

Just five minutes later, William Jackson put Goshen on the board with his fourth goal of the season. However, just 31 seconds later the Trojans were awarded another penalty kick, and Matt Yoder capitalized to make it 3-1. Goshen had 14 shots in the game compared to eight for Taylor. Both teams had seven shots on goal. GC led in corner kicks 6-1.

This was the first time the Maple Leafs have allowed three goals to Taylor since 2012. Pedro Diegues took four of Goshen's 14 shots and also led the team with two of the seven shots on goal. Nicholas Whitaker, Iker Fernandez-Andes, William Jackson, Stephen Bandi and Diogo Coelho also had shots on goal.

Goshen hosts #5 Bethel in a U.S. Highway 20 Cup matchup on Homecoming Weekend this Saturday, October 4, at 2:00 pm. The conference champion Goshen City FC team, which plays at the GC Soccer Complex over the summer and has numerous players on the Goshen College men's soccer team, will be recognized at halftime of the match.
