GOSHEN, Ind. - Indiana Wesleyan extended their conference match winning streak to 45 games with a win in Goshen on Wednesday night. The Wildcats beat the Maple Leafs 25-11, 25-19, 25-14.
The first set was the strongest for IWU. Although Goshen was only down 11-9 early on, the visitors ended the set on a 14-2 run. The Wildcats had a .412 hitting percentage, and the Leafs still maintained a respectable .212 hitting percentage.
The next set was Goshen's best opportunity. Down 18-12, the Leafs scored four points in a row.
Brenna Spangler had two aces in that period and she added a kill, along with
Nevaeh Benjamin. Spangler had a stat in every positive category possible. She finished with three kills, an assist, three aces, a solo block, a block assist and two digs. The Wildcats called a timeout after that run, and although the Leafs held within three until 22-19, IWU scored the last three points to win the set by six. They jumped to a 4-0 start in the third set and rode it through on the way to an 11-point third set win.
Alaina Wolfe had 15 digs, her most in a match since September 3. Both teams had five blocks and IWU narrowly led in the aces category 5-4.
Carmin Corey had six kills and
Armani Guidry-Austin had five.
Sydney Stutsman totaled 11 assists and
Carle Bruggema added eight more. Along with Spangler, Corey and Guidry-Austin also had solo blocks.
Now halfway through the conference schedule, Goshen competes this weekend against a few nonconference opponents at the Trolls Invite at Palos Heights, Ill. They'll face Stephens College on Friday at 8:00 pm EDT before taking on Trinity Christian and St. Francis (Ill.) the next day.
