PALOS HEIGHTS, Ill. - Kassidy Faler,
Sydney Stutsman and
Brenna Spangler were all freshmen the last time Goshen played Stephens in women's volleyball, and the Stars won in five sets. Now, as seniors, they were able to take down Stephens in five sets, winning 25-17, 18-25, 21-25, 25-19, 15-10 at the Trolls Invite on Friday night, hosted by Trinity Christian.
Goshen's win in the first set ended a streak of 15 set losses, all to Crossroads League opponents. With a 6-4 lead, GC scored seven in a row to take a 13-4 advantage. They held onto most of that lead, as they won by eight. The Stars had their own 13-4 lead in the second set, ultimately winning by seven. Then, they maintained a narrow lead for the second half of the third set to go up two sets to one.
In the fourth, the Maple Leafs ended the set with five straight points with kills from
Carmin Corey,
Armani Guidry-Austin and
Amelie Martinez. Along with a 9-2 run to start the fifth set, Goshen scored 14 out of 16 points going between the end of the fourth and the beginning of the fifth sets. The Stars pulled within one but the Leafs took five of the last six points, ending on a block from
Brenna Spangler.
Goshen led in kills, aces, blocks, assists and digs. Spangler had 12 kills, a .429 hitting percentage, two aces, a solo block, two block assists and a dig. She was an assist away from having a stat in every positive category for a second match in a row.
Amelie Martinez had nine kills and a .300 hitting percentage.
Sydney Stutsman had 22 assists and
Carle Bruggema had 13. Spangler and
Jessie Price had two aces each, including a crucial one from Price that came late in the fifth set.
Sami Lard had 13 digs,
Alaina Wolfe had 12 and Stutsman had ten.
Goshen ends a five-match losing streak and earns their first neutral site or road win since August 30. The Leafs finish the Trolls Invite tomorrow, with a match against Trinity Christian at 11:00 am Eastern and another at 1:00 pm Eastern against St. Francis (Ill.).
