FORT WAYNE, Ind. - Goshen faced Cornerstone on Halloween night in their first of two games at the USF Classic. A strong first-half run led to a 79-68 win for the Golden Eagles. Goshen faces Viterbo on Saturday at noon.
Cornerstone was up 20-11 in the first quarter, but Goshen head coach
Tyra Carver used a 30-second timeout to regroup the Leafs. They responded and went on an 11-2 run to tie the game. Goshen even took a brief lead, but the next Cornerstone run was one the Leafs couldn't battle back from, and the Golden Eagles rode it out for the rest of the game. Cornerstone had a 14-0 run from the 3:56 mark in the second quarter until there was 9:15 to go in the third. GC had a 12-4 run that spanned the third and fourth quarters, and even outscored Cornerstone by one in the second half, but the damage had already been done.
Zy'Ann Phinezy had no points and one rebound on Wednesday, but had a strong showing of 20 points and six rebounds tonight. She becomes the first Goshen freshman in program history to have a 20-point game before the conference opener since Mariah Roe dropped 22 points on IU-Kokomo on November 18, 2017.
Kyla Foster scored 15 points. After putting up 20 on Wednesday, this marks the first time in her career with back-to-back games of 15+ points. Lucia Luque had seven rebounds in 13 minutes of play, an improvement over her five rebounds in 18 minutes earlier in the week.
Goshen had 12 fewer turnovers than their first game, but 13 fewer rebounds as well. Cornerstone won the rebound margin by 12, and was led by Julie Ashbaugh, who scored 26 points and went 13-17 from the floor with 11 rebounds.
The Leafs face Viterbo (Wisconsin) on Saturday at noon to conclude the USF Classic.
