GOSHEN, Ind. - Men's basketball won their third straight game and improved to 4-2 on the season with a 71-65 victory over Aquinas at home on Saturday. Goshen had lost by nine against the Saints a year ago, and this is their first win over Aquinas since 2012.
The Leafs roared out to a 9-0 lead to start, and that proved to be the difference.
Juraj Minarovjech scored seven of Goshen's first nine points, with
Marcus Northern making the other basket. Their lead grew to 13 points in the first half, and they led 42-31 at the break.
The Goshen lead never grew more than 11 in the second half. In fact, the Saints cut it down to two at multiple points. However, with a 56-54 lead, Goshen went on a 9-0 run to go up 11 and finished with a six-point win.
For the third straight game,
Marcus Northern finished with five steals. He has 22 through six games this season. In his freshman season he had 21 steals over 26 games and he had 24 steals across 27 games a season ago. He leads the Crossroads League in steals per game with 3.7.
The Leafs had balanced scoring, with 13 points from Northern and ten each from
Kenny May,
Juraj Minarovjech and
Tyrelle Hunt. Seven players had at least four rebounds or more. May had a career high with 31 minutes played and tied a career high with five rebounds. Minarovjech had a career-high ten points - he had 11 total this season going into the match. It was the second time he has hit multiple threes in a game.
Kevin Cota had a career-high with three steals - two of them coming on back-to-back possessions.
Goshen will look to win a fourth straight game with their biggest challenge of the season up next. The Maple Leafs take on the top-ranked team in the NAIA, Indiana Wesleyan, on the road on Wednesday, November 19, at 7:00 pm.
