GOSHEN, Ind. - The Goshen men's basketball team lost a close challenge with Saint Mary-of-the-Woods on Wednesday afternoon. The Maple Leafs held a 15-point lead at the half but the Pomeroys came back to win 80-77.
Down 20-19 in the first half, Goshen went on an 11-0 run, with points from
Marcus Northern,
Tyrelle Hunt,
Jacob Carlson and
Saiveon Williams. The Leafs scored the last five points in the half as a part of an 11-2 run to go up 45-30 at the break. Goshen was shooting 42% from the field compared to 32% for SMWC.
Tyrelle Hunt scored first in the second half, but then the visitors had a long 24-4 stretch over a span of seven minutes and 14 seconds. They led by three, and then the teams went back and forth. Â The Pomeroys were up 75-68 when
Marcus Northern was fouled on a three-point attempt, and proceeded to make all three free-throws.
Tyrelle Hunt made a pair of free-throws with 20 seconds left to pull within one, but Goshen wasn't able to fully recover. The Leafs were 1-12 on their last 12 field goal attempts in the game and committed three turnovers in that span.
Goshen shot 26% from the field and 8% from three in the second half, but a perfect 17-17 at the free-throw line. They finished the day 25-27 at the line (93%). The 25 made free-throws are Goshen's highest total since October 27, 2020 against East-West. The 93% free-throw percentage is Goshen's highest in a game where they had at least 20 attempts since January 3, 2015, when they were 95% (20-21) against Saint Francis. The Pomeroys weren't great from behind the arc in the second half either, going 2-9. However, they had a field goal percentage of 55% in the last 20 minutes.
Marcus Northern had 18 points and tied a season-high with eight rebounds to lead Goshen's scoring.
Tyrelle Hunt added 14 points with seven rebounds and three steals. It's his fifth straight game scoring ten or more points.
Jacob Carlson tied a season-high with 11 points and six rebounds and
Saiveon Williams scored 11 points in 13 minutes off the bench. Williams' 11 points, three field goals, five free-throws made and four rebounds were all season highs.
Goshen comes back from the Thanksgiving break with an away game at Marian on Wednesday, December 3, at 7:30 pm.
