INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. - In their first game in 11 days, the Goshen women's basketball team went on the road to face #5 Marian. The Knights beat the Maple Leafs 91-45 - Goshen's fourth ranked opponent they have faced so far this season. The Knights are now 9-0 this season.
It took a little while for the Knights to warm up, but they eventually found a groove that they would maintain for the rest of the game. The Marian defense, which is holding their opponents to just 48.3 points per game, gave up just 17 points in the first two quarters. Goshen was 7-25 in the half, shooting 28%.
GC went 3-4 from behind the arc in the third quarter, with
Carrie Hiler,
Kyla Foster and
Zy'Ann Phinezy each hitting a three.
Ava Egolf had nine points in the fourth quarter alone, going 4-7 as the team shot 6-14. The Leafs even had a 10-0 run late in the fourth quarter, with four each from Egolf and Phinezy during the stretch. Yet it was too little too late, as the Knights cruised to victory to stay undefeated.
Carrie Hiler scored 13 points to lead the Leafs. She was 3-10 from deep and had a pair of rebounds.
Ava Egolf had nine points, all in the fourth quarter. She also showed up on the defensive end with five steals. Egolf had five steals in the last six games combined. She has recorded at least one steal in seven of her eight games this season, but had never recorded more than one steal in a game before. The five steals are the most by a GC player since
Ava Lickliter had five on January 18 last season against Huntington.
Zy'Ann Phinezy had 11 points off the bench with a career-high three assists. She has scored in double figures in five of the last six games and seen her scoring average improve from 7.0 to 10.8 points per game. Lucia Luque had a season-high with ten rebounds.
Goshen is at Taylor on Saturday, December 6, at 1:00 pm. The Trojans are receiving votes in the NAIA coaches' poll.
