UPLAND, Ind. - Goshen forced 20 Taylor turnovers and
Ava Egolf scored a career-high 16 points, but the Trojans, who are receiving votes in the NAIA coaches' poll, came away with a 74-60 win in Upland on Saturday afternoon to remain undefeated.
Taylor improved to 10-0 with the win and 4-0 in the Crossroads League. Both teams got off to a hot start offensively. With the teams tied at 12 apiece with less than five minutes having gone by in the first quarter, Taylor went on a 9-0 run. Goshen answered with five points in a row and the Trojans led 27-21 going into the second.
The Maple Leafs' defense made strides quarter by quarter. They allowed 18 points in the second quarter - nine fewer than the first - followed by 16 in the third and 13 in the fourth. It was the second straight game and the fourth time this season that GC had more steals than their opponent. Unfortunately, the first quarter was also their own highest-scoring quarter. The third quarter saw the Leafs score just six points.
Goshen forced 20 turnovers and had just 12 of their own. The +8 turnover margin is their best in a Crossroads League game since February 3, 2024, against Mount Vernon Nazarene. The Leafs scored more points off turnovers as well. Among the 11 opponents they have faced this season, the three teams that have had the most turnovers were all Crossroads League opponents. Goshen forced Taylor, Bethel and Marian all to 17 turnovers or more. Taylor dominated the rebounding category, though, leading 56-34.
Ava Egolf scored 16 points for Goshen. She had three rebounds, two assists and two steals. This was not only a career-high in points for Egolf, but the first time she had scored in double figures. It was also the first time she has made multiple three-pointers in the same game.
Zy'Ann Phinezy scored ten and was 5-11 from the field.
Paulecia Isom scored 13 and shot 5-11 as well. She had five rebounds, two assists and a steal. It was the first time she had scored more than six points since November 1. It was also her highest rebound total since that date as well.
Carrie Hiler tied a career-high with four rebounds and Lucia Luque Morales had a career-high six offensive rebounds.
Goshen's next game is a home contest that was recently added to the schedule. The Leafs will take on IU-Columbus on Saturday, December 13, at 3:00 pm in Ruth Gunden Gymnasium.
