Game Recap: Men's Basketball | | Justin DeWeese

Spring Arbor's early surge sends Goshen to 88-68 defeat

Cougars dominate with 18-0 first-half run, Maple Leafs unable to recover despite strong finish

SPRING ARBOR, Mich. - A poor offensive start despite a better second half finish resulted in a road loss for the men's basketball team at Spring Arbor on Thursday night. The Cougars won the game that was postponed from Wednesday by a score of 88-68.

SAU went on an 18-0 run when the teams were tied 16-16 to go up 34-16 with under five minutes to go in the first half. A three-pointer from Baran Aslan ended a scoring drought for the Maple Leafs that lasted over seven minutes. 16 of Goshen's 25 shot attempts in the half were from three, but they made just four of them. They finished the evening at 22% from three.

While Goshen still couldn't connect from deep in the second half, they were scoring inside and at the free-throw line. GC shot 50% from the field in the second half and 79% from the line, making 15 of 19 free-throw attempts. And while the Cougars struggled from deep as well, they shot 55% overall for the game and made 18 of their 21 free-throw attempts, including going 9-9 in the first half.

Judah Simfukwe had 18 points for Goshen and shot 6-10. Marcus Northern had 12 points, his fourth straight game in double figures. Richard Wilson added 12 with six rebounds. DJ Bryant had 11 points, the second-most he has had in a game this season and his most in this calendar year. Saiveon Williams had three of Goshen's five blocks, tying a season-high he set last weekend.

Goshen hosts Taylor on Saturday, February 15, at 3:00 pm for Senior Day. DJ Bryant and Richard Wilson will be recognized before the game with five minutes to go as part of the Senior Day festivities.
