Goshen secures tournament spot despite loss, #2 IWU moves to 26-1 with win

The Leafs had an early 17-11 lead against the Wildcats

GOSHEN, Ind. - Goshen was up on the #2 team in the NAIA after the first quarter, but Indiana Wesleyan dominated the next three, winning 86-53 and improving to 26-1 this season on Wednesday night in Goshen.

Goshen has officially made the Crossroads League tournament due to Grace's loss against Saint Francis. The Leafs currently sit at eighth in the conference and would need a win, a loss from Mount Vernon Nazarene and a win from Bethel in order to move up to a higher seed.

The Leafs held the Wildcats to shooting 35% in the first quarter and Goshen was up 17-11 with a six-point lead at one point. The visitors took a 24-21 lead in the second quarter on a three-pointer from Izzy Reed, and Goshen was never back in it from that point on. IWU had eight players score seven or more points while Goshen had three. GC had 20 turnovers and Indiana Wesleyan had ten.

Zion Neat led the Maple Leafs with 19 points. She went 3-5 from deep and had three rebounds, three assists and a steal. Carrie Hiler scored nine points in 18 minutes, making three threes and tying a career-high. Kiana Oelling scored eight points and made four of her five field goal attempts with four rebounds, but she had six turnovers to her name. Syanne Mohamed had ten rebounds and a career-high four steals, but only scored four points on the offensive end. Ava Lickliter led the team with five assists, her sixth game this season with five or more.

Neat passed Krysten Parson for fifth place in school history in career three-pointers made. Her career total of 240 including her time at Columbia International would be a GC record. Neat is now 14th in school history in career points and Syanne Mohamed is in 18th.

Goshen (11-15, 5-12 CL) is at Huntington on Saturday, February 22, at 1:00 pm.
