Leafs recover to win game two over Pilots after dropping game one

Goshen is 9-2 against Bethel in the last 11 matchups

GOSHEN, Ind. - Alyssa McDonald reached base six times in Goshen's pair of games against Bethel at home on Friday. The Pilots won game one 9-6 but the Maple Leafs recovered to win game two 9-8. Goshen is 9-2 against Bethel over their last 11 matchups.

Game One
Alyssa McDonald hit a two-RBI double in the first inning and Sydney Lockhart hit a solo shot in the second, the first home run of her collegiate career, to put the Leafs up early 3-0. However, Bethel had a six-run inning in the third with a three-run home run and three unearned runs after a Goshen error.

The Leafs came back to tie it in the bottom half of the inning. Brinleigh Arredondo reached base on a fly ball that was dropped in center field and McDonald scored. Kamille Badibanga hit a two-RBI single that scored Ella Mcleod and Grace Schmitt.

That was the last of the scoring for Goshen, though. Bethel added a run in the fifth and two more in the sixth to win 9-6. They had 14 hits and Goshen had nine. Grace Schmitt had the loss, allowing four earned runs in four innings pitched. She had no walks, but no strikeouts either. Tatem Adams allowed two earned runs and two hits in three innings. She struck out three and walked none. Alyssa McDonald was 2-3 with two doubles, two RBIs, two stolen bases and a run scored. She was also hit by a pitch. Ella Mcleod had a pair of singles and Kamille Badibanga had two RBIs.

Game Two
Bethel scored twice on Goshen starter Camryn Barrows in game two but the Leafs had their own six-run inning in the first to take a 6-2 lead. Bethel's starting pitcher Haylee Allen lasted just two thirds of an inning. Bianca Diamond hit a two-run shot, followed by a grand slam off the bat of Kamille Badibanga. Alyssa McDonald scored a run in the second inning on a Bethel throwing error to take the lead to 7-2.

The Pilots had a three-run homer in the third to pull within two and an RBI double in the fourth to get within one. The Maple Leafs answered back with RBI doubles from Brinleigh Arredondo and Kaylee Kates to go up 9-6, which gave them enough breathing room in what would be a 9-8 win.

Tatem Adams earned the win for Goshen, the first for the freshman from Greenfield, Indiana. She allowed two earned runs in 2.2 innings, walking none. Shea VanScoter threw the last inning and earned her third save of the season, getting two flyouts and a groundout from the Bethel batters.

Badibanga had four RBIs with her grand slam and has now recorded at least one RBI in seven of the last eight games. Kaylee Kates, Bianca Diamond and Alyssa McDonald all had two hits apiece. McDonald, Carissa Fillingame and Brinleigh Arredondo all scored twice in the game.

The Leafs are at Saint Francis on Saturday, March 15, at 1:00 pm.
