GOSHEN, Ind. - The Goshen softball team ended a 37-game losing streak against the #11 Marian Knights with an impressive 11-10 comeback win in game two after being down 10-4. Marian won game one 8-0. The Knights had a 20-3 record leading up to Goshen's win and were on a seven-game win streak.
Game One
Before totaling 12 hits in game one, Goshen was held to just one hit in the first game. It didn't come until there were two outs in the bottom of the seventh, when
Alyssa McDonald singled through the left side. Marian, on the other hand, scored eight runs on 12 hits, with home runs in the fifth and seventh innings.
Shea VanScoter allowed three earned in four innings, taking the loss.
Grace Schmitt allowed three earned over the next three innings.
Game Two
Marian scored three runs in the top of the first and added a two-run homer in the second inning to go up 5-0. The Maple Leafs got on the scoreboard for the first time on the day when
Kamille Badibanga hit a sac fly to center field. The next batter was
Grace Schmitt, who hit an RBI double to cut Marian's lead to three.
The Knights scored another three runs in the third and after one in the fourth they were up 9-2. Goshen scored twice in the fourth and the Knights had one in the sixth to make it 10-4. It was the bottom of the sixth when the Leafs came through big.
Goshen already had two outs in the inning with
Kaylee Kates on second.
Shea VanScoter hit an RBI single to score Kates and advanced to third after an error.
Alyssa McDonald walked and stole second and then
Brinleigh Arredondo hit a two-RBI double to make the score 10-7.
Carissa Fillingame hit an RBI single to score Arredondo, which was followed by a walk from
Sydney Lockhart and a single from
Kamille Badibanga, which scored Fillingame.
After a Marian pitching change,
Grace Schmitt walked to load the bases, and a wild pitch advanced everyone a base. Pinch runner
Rachel Kates slid into home to tie the game 10-10.
Kaylee Kates, who was at the plate, hit a single to left field and scored
Kamille Badibanga to give the Leafs their first lead of the day.
Tatem Adams had thrown the prior four innings in relief, allowing four earned runs. Then it was
Shea VanScoter coming in in the save situation at the top of the seventh. She came up clutch, retiring three Knights batters in a row with a flyout, a popup and a strikeout.
Adams earned the win and VanScoter got the save. This was Goshen's first win against Marian since a 6-4 win against the Knights on April 25, 2014. It was only the second time that Goshen had scored 11 or more runs against Marian in program history.
Brinleigh Arredondo went 3-3 at the plate with a double, two singles, two runs, an RBI and a walk.
Kaylee Kates had two singles and two stolen bases with a run and an RBI.
Grace Schmitt had a double and a single in addition to a run, an RBI and a walk.
Carissa Fillingame and
Kamille Badibanga had two runs apiece.
Goshen (8-14, 4-8 CL) is at Saint Francis on Friday, March 28, at 1:00 pm. These games were originally scheduled to be played on March 15 but were postponed due to field conditions.
